I remember that day when moving to the Netherlands stopped being just a thought and it became an actual possibility. I understood that my life wasn`t at a place where I wanted it to see and I started to look for an opportunity to begin something new. And I got the answer I was looking for. It was an official job offer Netherlands tech firms are famous for. I was proposed to get a senior product role in Amsterdam with full sponsorship. I was applying for jobs in the Netherlands for some time already and after many refusals already stopped counting on any positive reply. But that was exactly that email that led me to my new life.

Getting a Netherlands job offer is the hardest part of the relocation, but it instantly sets everything else in motion. The compensation package was solid, including the 30% tax ruling eligibility, which allows expats to receive 30% of their gross salary tax-free. That extra income made the prospect of relocating to the Netherlands far more real financially.
Moving to the Netherlands for Work
Work Permit and Employer Sponsorship
I was not an EU citizen. So for working in the Netherlands I needed a sponsored route. This program did not mean I could skip rules. It meant someone who already knew the system filed next to me. The employer filed the work visa Netherlands file. I sent diplomas, a clean passport scan, and tried not to refresh the IND portal every hour. For me that was the highly skilled migrant Netherlands path.
Preparing for Relocation
I sold the car, boxed winter clothes which I thought I would not need (I was so wrong about it), and booked a two-week Airbnb. Friends warned me about housing and they were right. That`s why I signed up for a temporary room first so I could have an address for municipality registration.
My First Months in the Netherlands
Housing, BSN and Health Insurance
To legally work and open a local bank account, you need a citizen service number (Burgerservicenummer). It took two weeks to get an appointment at the municipality, but without a registered address, you can’t get a permanent BSN.
Finding an apartment in the Randstad area is notoriously competitive. I looked at 14 places and spent roughly €1,800/month for a one-bedroom apartment in Utrecht, commuting 25 minutes to Amsterdam. Once registered, I signed up for mandatory Dutch health insurance, which costs about €140 per month.
Dutch Work Culture and Daily Life
Working in the Netherlands was a breath of fresh air. The culture is built on direct communication, flat hierarchies, and strict job-life balance. By 5:00 PM, people shut their laptops and head out for a beer or a bike ride.
Challenges I Faced After Moving
The transition wasn’t completely seamless. The housing crisis almost forced me into short-term holiday rentals, and navigating Dutch municipal registration without a fixed lease caused immense stress. Additionally, while almost everyone speaks fluent English, missing out local conversations during coffee breaks made me feel isolated initially. I solved this by enrolling in an evening A1 Dutch language course.
Building a Long-Term Future
After the first contract extension I stopped living with the thoughts that it was only temporal and started to think about fully settling in. Permanent residence is not prolonged automatically. You still require lawful stay and the conditions of that year and carefully gather the needed amount of all the documents.
What I Wish I Had Known Before Moving
You should begin to search for a place to live before the flight. It is better to secure a budget for a month or two without no income. English is enough for many jobs in the country, but Dutch is how you stop being a guest. A recognized sponsor helps you to relocate to the Netherlands. But getting through the BSN line at the city hall will be your responsibility.
Relocating to the Netherlands did change my life. Not because the offer itself was special. The reason was that the job let me move to the Netherlands for work and then stay long enough to organize my ordinary days.
